The 2010 FIFA World Cup woke a nation up to the problem of human trafficking ..
...already within its borders. Before the World Cup, the most common question asked was, “Does Human Trafficking really happen in South Africa?” Now the games have ended, the government and the citizens are far more equipped to recognize trafficking and combat it. It seemed as though the impact of five years of awareness raising work and training was condensed into intense season of time.
“Mobilizing a Nation” is a phrase which came up time and time again during the Justice ACTs debrief week. As our team of twenty, some short-term volunteers, tallied the numbers and assessed the extent of the impact of our ministry, we couldn’t help but shake our heads in disbelief and praise a God who loves to do more than we could ask or imagine. When the eyes of the globe focused on South Africa and the issue of human trafficking, Justice ACTs was already established in counter-trafficking work and found itself thrust onto the radar of the media and the South African Government as an authority in national human trafficking.
“It was a whirlwind,” says Christina Bacino, a focus leader for Justice ACTs. Invitations to train on prevention work, prostitution outreach and intercession flooded in. The police, social workers and other NGOs asked Justice ACTs to train them to recognize and respond to human trafficking. The team suddenly found themselves sitting in government meetings at the request of the Department of Social Development and the Western Cape Premier’s Office, collaborating together to address human trafficking.

Short-term outreach opportunities
We regularly train YWAM outreach teams to do counter-trafficking as a part of their outreach. This involves doing prevention work, reaching out to prostitutes and buyers of sex, intercession and assisting victims, if located.
